Most advice about Google reviews is opinion. These twelve numbers are not. Together they describe how customers actually choose between local businesses, and they all point the same direction: reviews are read, replies are read harder, and speed decides how it ends.

THE SHORT VERSION
Nearly everyone reads reviews before choosing, and a third of them filter at 4.5 stars.
Your replies are read by 97% of review readers. They are marketing copy.
Customers expect a reply within days. Most businesses never send one.
A personal reply within 24 hours turns a third of negative reviews around.
Only the last 30 days really count, and reviews feed your map ranking directly.

Customers check reviews before they choose you

Before a customer calls, books, or walks in, they read. Not your website first. Your reviews.

Your replies are read like marketing copy

Write every reply knowing the audience is the next hundred readers, not just the reviewer. If a review is unfair, answer calmly for that audience. Our guide to responding to negative reviews has templates for the hard ones.

A fast reply is the expectation

Reply speed is no longer a bonus. Customers bring the response-time expectations they learned from support chats to the review page.

Half your reviewers are watching the clock from the moment they post.

It is rarely the review that does the damage. It is the silence under it.

Recency beats lifetime totals

Customers do not average your whole history. They read the first screen and check the dates.

11
73%
only trust reviews written in the last 30 days.
Last year's five-star wall reads as history, not evidence.

Momentum beats totals: twelve reviews spread across this quarter beat two hundred from 2024. That is why a steady ask routine matters, and our scripts for asking without feeling pushy are the place to start.

Reviews move rankings, and rankings move revenue

None of this stays on the review page. Reviews are one of the strongest inputs into which three businesses Google shows on the map.

16%
of local Map Pack ranking signal comes from reviews.

Downstream of visibility, the effect is measurable. Studies put the lift from improved ratings and consistent replying at up to 18% of revenue. On a $300,000 business, even half that lift is worth $27,000 a year. And 89% of consumers say they are highly or fairly likely to use a business that responds to all of its reviews (BrightLocal).

What to change this week

You do not need a strategy deck. You need a routine.

Reply to every review from the last 30 days, oldest first. Silence is what readers punish.
Set a 24-hour target for every new review, positive ones included.
If you are under 4.5 stars, make asking part of every good customer interaction.
Put your review link where customers already look: receipts, follow-up texts, email signatures.
Watch recency, not totals. A quiet month costs more than it looks.
