Google reviews for home services: win the "near me" search

Reviews decide who gets the call. A playbook for plumbers, electricians, and HVAC crews.

A burst pipe does not shop around. The homeowner searches "plumber near me", reads for ninety seconds, and calls one of the three names on the map. For trades, reviews are not marketing support. They are the whole storefront, read at the worst moment of someone's week.

What "near me" searchers decide from

Urgency compresses research. The searcher sees the Map Pack three, compares stars and review counts, then skims the newest reviews for two signals: did they show up when they said, and did the price match the quote. 81% of consumers read reviews before choosing and 31% filter below 4.5 stars (full numbers in our statistics rundown, pending verification). Being third-best on reviews in your zip code means being invisible at 2am.

Rank for the whole service area

Trades fight a special ranking problem: you serve twenty neighborhoods from one address, and the pack is computed from the searcher's location. You cannot move, but you can feed the two forces you control: profile relevance (exact services listed, service area set honestly; the profile checklist covers it) and review prominence, where reviews carry about 16% of ranking signal (source: local ranking factor studies · verify before publish). Reviews that name the neighborhood and the job ("water heater in Arcadia") do double duty: ranking text and proof for the next Arcadia searcher.

The ask that fits a job site

The moment is the walkthrough: the work is done, the homeowner is relieved, and you are face to face. One sentence, then a same-day text:

SCRIPT · COPY AND ADAPT
"Glad we could get this sorted today. If you've got a minute later, a quick Google review is the biggest thing that helps a local crew like ours. I'll text you the link so it's one tap."
Send the review link before you leave the driveway. Review intent has a half-life of hours.
Make it part of closing every job ticket, not a thing you remember on slow weeks. Steady beats bursts; recency is what searchers trust.
Ask every customer, not just the easy jobs. Filtering is gating, and the rules are strict about it.

The reviews that mention price

Trades take more pricing complaints than any other category, and the reply is read by every future customer comparing quotes. Never relitigate the invoice in public. Acknowledge, state your practice plainly, move it offline:

REPLY TEMPLATE · COPY AND ADAPT
"Hi Dana, thanks for the straight feedback. We quote before we open a wall and stick to it, so if something on the invoice didn't match what we discussed, I want to see it. Call me directly at (602) 555-0144 and we'll go through it line by line."

Confident, specific, and zero defensiveness. The five-part structure and more templates are in our negative review guide.
